ABOUT MATTHEW
Matt Tinker is a psychotherapist with over 25 years of professional experience supporting adults facing a wide range of psychological challenges, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, trauma, relationship and family difficulties, as well as issues related to alcohol use and recovery.
His career in mental health began in the late 1990s when he trained and qualified as a mental health nurse. He later trained as a psychotherapist within the NHS, where he worked for many years before moving into private practice.
Matt’s core training is in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)—a collaborative and relational approach that helps people recognise and change unhelpful patterns in their lives. CAT continues to shape his therapeutic style through its emphasis on clarity, connection, and compassion.
Alongside his professional expertise, Matt brings personal insight from his own recovery journey. His involvement in 12-step recovery has given him a deep appreciation for the courage it takes to seek help and the healing power of honesty, support, and shared understanding. These values are central to how he works with clients.
For some clients, therapy may also be a space to explore questions around meaning, purpose, or spirituality. While Matt draws personally from a Catholic tradition, his approach is respectful and inclusive of each person’s individual beliefs and values.
Matt aims to provide a safe, open space where people can reflect on what matters most to them. He integrates a range of approaches including CAT, EMDR, EFT, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and trauma-informed practice, adapting therapy to meet the unique needs of each individual.
As an ACEP (Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology) Certified Practitioner of Emotional Freedom Techniques (ACP-EFT) and a qualified EMDR therapist (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), he uses both EFT and EMDR to treat trauma, helping you process and recover from past experiences that are affecting your mental health and well-being. He also uses Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) elements as a holistic approach to healing trauma or unhealthy attachment patterns formed in early childhood. SP integrates the body into traditional talk therapy to address and heal trauma and psychological difficulties.
Matt’s approach to therapy is integrative, practical, and interactive, enabling you to learn how to self-regulate. He encourages you to shift thinking patterns and change behaviours – to empower you to facilitate change by adopting different attitudes and perspectives to the issues and challenges you face to lead a more fulfilling life.
